Bohol, Philippines - A Travel Destination

Bohol is an island province in the Philippines, consisting of Bohol Island as the main island and 73 minor surrounding islands. Located in the Central Visayas Region, Bohol is the tenth largest island in Philippines with a total land area of 4,117.3 square kilometers and a coastline of 261 kilometers. Bohol is surrounded by the island of Cebu in the west, Leyte in the northeast and across the Bohol Sea is Mindanao in the South.

Bohol also hosted two significant revolts during the Spanish colonization in the Philippines; the Tamblot uprising in 1621 led by a native priest or babaylan – Tamblot and the Dagohoy Rebellion led by Francisco Dagohoy which lasted from 1744 to 1829 – considered as the longest in Philippine history.

Bohol is known worldwide as a popular tourist destination with its beaches and resorts, endemic rare species, diving sites and the famous Chocolate Hills.

The Chocolate Hills are numerous mounds of limestone formation, which is unique only to Bohol. It is named Chocolate Hills because its color changes to chocolate brown during summer months as the grasses and shrubs on the hill die with the summer heat. Although the Philippine Tarsier is a member of a 45 million year old family, it was only introduced to western biologists in the 18th century. It is a very tiny animal, about 85 to 160 millimeters in height and considered one of the smallest primates. It weighs only 80 to 160 grams with very large eyes that are fixed to its skull. Its large eyes make it to the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest eyes on any mammal.

Another tourist attraction in Bohol is the famous Loboc River Cruise which takes a tourist down the Loboc River channel while treating them with a lunch buffet on the floating raft. The one-hour cruise treats the diners with a sumptuous feast on Bohol native dishes, a great view of the Loboc River banks, and relaxing music performed by native musicians. The Loboc River has an un-usually yellowish-green color as the eroded soil mixed with the greenish, algae-rich water.
